The magnificent Baroque complex of the Benedictine monastery dominates with the monastery church and its two domed towers majestically the valley floor of Disentis. The St. Martin Monastery Church is of high art historical value and a cultural asset of national importance. According to Swiss art guide GSK, it represents one of the early wall-pillar galleries in the South German Baroque cultural region. Currently, the monastery church is undergoing extensive renovation, so it cannot be visited until November 2019.
Monasteries are the oldest guest inns and inns in our region. For shorter or longer stays in a monastery, it is an experience for body and soul. Monasteries have a long tradition and rich experience in hosting guests. The Disentis Monastery is primarily a place of devotion, silence, reflection, and prayer. But it is also a place for meetings, inspiration, and confrontation, all behind walls that are hundreds of years old and in corridors that tell stories. Depending on the offering, guests can participate in the life of the monastic community, experience spirituality, take care of their health, study, or just relax quietly in peace and quiet.
The Disentis Monastery sees itself as a counterprogram to the often stressful everyday life. A space where you can feel the energy that rests here at this very special place near the source of the Rhine.
Since always, monasteries are places of silence and contemplation and offer stress-tormented, peace-seeking people a break and spiritual recovery. "Silence" does not mean speaking no word, but refraining from using the mobile phone, no traffic noise, no hustle and bustle in the office, and much more.
Clausura and culture have been part of the Disentis Monastery since its founding; companies can stop behind the monastery walls, hold meetings, or celebrate special occasions and festivals.
The Peter Kaiser Hall is a stage in the figurative and literal sense, where almost everything can happen. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the hall is suitable for theater and music performances as well as for training courses, conferences, general meetings, and weddings. Up to 220 people can be accommodated.

The Monastery – a special "setting"
Besides space and room and food and drink, the monastery offers a unique "setting" and an atmosphere that is one of a kind. In addition, a rich "treasure chest" of religious, cultural, natural-historical, and musical-artistic artifacts: the choral singing of the monks during their hourly prayers, the organ performances by Father Urban Affentranger or Brother Stefan Keusch, the exhibitions by Father Theo Theiler in the Monastery Museum, and the architecture of the monastery church and convent building – all this and much more can be seen, heard, and experienced at the Disentis Monastery. Upon request with expert guidance. Or with a lecture. Or with a meeting with members of the monastic community.
Guest Rooms
The Disentis Monastery opened new hotel rooms of a high standard in January 2017. This increases the accommodation capacity to 40 rooms or 63 beds. The beautiful rooms, made of light fir wood and renovated by the monastery’s own carpentry, are deliberately without a television, so as not to distract from the deceleration in this breathtaking atmosphere. The view of Disentis, the mountains of Val Medel, and the valley of Surselva are far more impressive than any television program could ever be.
Stiva St. Placi
In the Stiva St. Placi, people meet daily from 8 am to 5 pm, chat over coffee, or enjoy the rich breakfast or Vesper with fine monastery products: yogurt, milk, and cheese come from the monastery’s own dairy, and the bread and fine Bündner nut cake are baked by Bäcker and Brother Gerhard.
