Planning Your 2026 Wedding: The 5 Most Important Steps & Costs

1. Budget festlegen: Was kostet eine Hochzeit wirklich?

In brief
Anyone wanting to marry on a Saturday in summer 2027 should enquire now. Most couples look for their venue six months to a year in advance, many even earlier.
August and September are the most sought-after months, almost always on a Saturday. Friday is the most common alternative.
A wedding in Switzerland usually costs between CHF 25,000 and CHF 50,000, depending on the number of guests.

Planning for 2027 is already well underway. We analysed our wedding enquiries: since the start of 2026, a large proportion of enquiries with a specified year already concern 2027, and we receive more wedding enquiries in January than in any other month. So if you want a popular Saturday in summer, it's best not to wait until after the holidays. Here are the five steps in the right order, with a timeline through to the big day.

When and how couples want to marry

The classic remains a Saturday in late summer. The vast majority want a date between May and September, with August and September being the most popular. Those with a fixed date in mind usually enquire six months to a year beforehand. Couples who are still flexible and simply write "Summer 2027" often get in touch much earlier.

Five steps to your 2027 wedding

The order matters: budget and guest numbers determine the venue, and the venue determines almost everything else.

Budget and guest numbers are directly linked. Settle both before you start looking at venues.

Enquire about venues

For a Saturday in summer, this is the most important step. Enquire with several venues using the same details.

Book your suppliers

Good photographers, celebrants and bands are often booked up early for summer Saturdays.

Saturday, Friday or off-season?

June to September is peak season. Popular venues, photographers and bands are often booked first for Saturdays. If you're flexible, you have three options:

  • Friday instead of Saturday: The most common alternative. Ask specifically whether venues and suppliers offer different terms for Fridays.
  • May or October: Mild weather, more choice. For ideas, see the article Getting married in autumn.
  • Winter: The best availability, but you'll need an indoor venue. The article Winter wedding on Lake Geneva shows why it can be worthwhile.

Couples wanting a civil ceremony on the same day at the venue should first secure the date with the civil registry office and then reserve the venue. Summer Saturdays also fill up quickly at the registry offices.

Which venue suits you?

The venue is the biggest decision and, together with the food, usually the biggest budget item. Three questions help narrow it down:

  • Style: Castles and hotels are the most convenient option, often with rooms for guests. Barns, wine presses and vineyards feel more relaxed but often require external catering. Restaurants and lofts in the city are easy to reach by public transport.
  • On-site ceremony: If you want to say "I do" at the same venue, ask whether it's a recognised marriage location or offers independent ceremonies.
  • Capacity: Plan with your realistic guest number plus a small buffer, not the maximum capacity.

For inspiration, see the articles Wedding venues in Switzerland and Dream wedding by the lake. All venues with capacities and direct enquiry options can be found on the Wedding venues in Switzerland page.

Wedding planner: yes or no?

A wedding planner usually costs 10 to 15 percent of the budget and saves many hours of coordination. This is especially worthwhile if you both work full-time, are planning for more than 100 guests, or are booking a venue without its own staff. A cheaper alternative is on-the-day coordination, which only manages the wedding day itself, so you can simply celebrate. You'll find planners among our wedding suppliers.

Inspiration at a wedding fair

Many wedding fairs in Switzerland take place in the first months of the year. In a single afternoon, you can discover venues, photographers and florists that you'd otherwise have to contact individually. Dates and locations are listed in the overview Wedding fairs in Switzerland. The article Visiting a wedding fair shows how to prepare for your visit.
